On Dec. 5, 2007, Sunkist Country Club and Sunkist Ladies Golf Association held a special Golf Tournament and 90th Birthday celebration in honor of Irene Flavian. Over 45 ladies from around Mississippi and Louisiana participated in the tournament and party. Irene has been a long time member of Sunkist and participant in numerous MWGA State events over the past 50 years. Most notable, she was the State Champion in three MWGA State Amateur Championships. (1967, Sunkist CC; 1968, Colonial CC; and 1969, Pass Christian Isle CC). Lou Hart, past State Champion numerous times, attended the celebration and gave a commendable rendition of her first meeting with Irene....and having to play Irene during the State Amateur at age 16....and consequence loss. She was an inspiration to Lou and junior golf, even in those early days of golf.
Irene continues to play weekly at Sunkist CC and is a inspiration to us all to continue playing and encouraging others, young and old, to take up the game of golf.
